Shawn Mims (born March 22, 1981) is an American hip hop artist. He is best
known for his 2007 single "This Is Why I'm Hot."
Biography
MIMS was born in Washington Heights, Manhattan to a family of Jamaican
American and Ghanaian heritage.[1] By the age of thirteen, both of MIMS'
parents had died. His mother passed away right after she gave birth to his
baby sister due to birth complications. His father died when MIMS was
eleven, he didn't know him very well but respected him. His mother supported
his dream and bought him DJ equipment. It was his love for music which kept
him focused on success, and out of trouble.[2] Originally known as Mr. Mims,
MIMS was an underground MC and producer in Washington Heights.
Sometime around 2000, MIMS joined Latino record label UBO Records. UBO
helped MIMS get a deal with Capitol Records. MIMS had stated in an interview
that UBO was a part of the EMI Group, and that's one reason he signed with
Capitol. While with UBO, MIMS appeared on a Baby Blue Soundcrew compilation
called Private Party Collector's Edition Vol. 2. He was featured on the
album's first single "Love 'Em All" also featuring Canadian hip hop artist
Choclair.[3] The song was only released in Canada, and MIMS also appeared in
the music video. In 2003, he released the underground hit "I Did You Wrong".
In 2006, he had left UBO, on friendly terms, to search for a label to
compliment him more. He has stated that they would've done all that they
could to have made him successful, but they mainly deal with Latin hip hop
and he would have slowed them down and they would've slowed him down, too.
While attending his sister's father's wedding, he would be introduced to DJ
Blackout of The Blackout Movement.
In 2006, he formed his own record label American King Music and recorded a
mixtape entitled 'The Future'. While still unsigned MIMS stayed determined
and recorded future #1 hit This Is Why I'm Hot in his home studio in
Washington Heights. After the song began to gain some airplay, he would be
pursued by many record labels but would sign with Capitol Records. He would
then record his debut album Music Is My Savior. The album's lead single
would hit no.1 on the Billboard Hot 100. MIMS would later release a remix of
"This Is Why I'm Hot" featuring Junior Reid and Cham, and a rock remix
entitled "This Is Why I Rock" with Miami rock group Purple Popcorn.
MIMS also released a rock remix of This Is Why I'm Hot entitled "This is Why
I'm Hot (Rock Mix)", also titled "This Is Why I Rock", with Purple Popcorn,
which can be heard at Prefix Magazine and also released on several online
music stores like the iTunes Music Store.
Controversy
In May 2007, it was reported in SOHH NYC that MIMS had made negative
comments about fellow New York rapper 50 Cent. The article stated that 50
Cent should be worried because a new rapper is having success. He had also
said that 50 is trying to take the attention away from him by releasing four
new songs. MIMS said he would be worried, too, if he were a rapper on top of
his game and a new rapper came out and took all the attention. MIMS later
came out and said that those rumors were false, and that he has a lot of
respect for 50 Cent and G-Unit. He also said that he didn't know who started
the rumor but it is false because he always speaks highly of 50 in
interviews and that 50's new album would be his best yet.
Discography
On March 27, 2007, MIMS released his debut album Music Is My Savior after
